The Last Summer HolidayThe Last Summer Holiday

Raise a ger with your own hands.

You are a kid sent to your grandparents' camp for the summer. The ger (yurt) arrives flat on an ox-cart, and the whole of it is laid out in the grass before anything goes up: the shal floor boards, the khaalga door that faces south, five khana lattice walls, the toono crown ring, the uni roof poles, the felts, the ropes. You carry each piece, you set it, and the wall closes around you one arc at a time. The büslüür belts are not a button — you tie the coil on at the door and walk the rope round the ger yourself, and it ties off as you come back to where you started.

Then you step over the bosgo, the raised threshold you are told never to stand on, and you are inside your own house.

A day is one new white food

Emee teaches one, and only one, each morning. You light the zuukh off dried argal, you milk at the udder from the right side with the pail filling under your hands, and you set the day's dish in the togoo, the wide pan sunk in the stove top.

Öröm takes two days, and the game is built on that. You simmer the milk and lift it back on the ladle from a height — samrakh — and then you leave it. The pan stands overnight on a stove that has long gone out, and in the morning you lift the skin off in one piece. Then tarag. Then aarts, eezgii, shar tos.

Everything you have made stands on the shiree in the khoimor — the low table at the place of honour, at the back of the ger — in colour. The dishes you have not made are grey. That table is the only progress bar in this game.

A night is a folktale, and then you are inside it

Some nights you lie down and your grandfather starts talking instead of the day turning over. The fire is banked, the ribs of the roof go dark, and he tells you a real üliger — a folktale told aloud, the thing every adult remembers about being a child in a ger.

Then you dream it.

The dream is your own camp, wrong. The same ground at night under a sky pushed violet, in fog thick enough that a thing twenty metres away is only a shape. And there is something down the yard. The arvan tavan tolgoit khar mangas, the fifteen-headed black monster of the folktales, has fourteen heads that talk, and they know your name. Your grandfather's warning is the whole fight: do not answer them, take them one at a time, count out loud.

Fifteen heads is fifteen chances, not a health bar. A head rears, you get out of its way, and for as long as it is down it is yours. If it puts you on the ground the night does not end and nothing is taken off you — you get up and go again, free, as many times as you want.

Nothing here can be lost

• No fail state, anywhere. A bad stroke is a slow stroke. A fight that goes badly is a night you go back to.

• No combat outside a dream. Nothing in the waking camp is an enemy.

• The night waits. The clock parks at the end of the evening and stays there until you go to bed. A day passes because you slept, not because you were slow.

• The notebook keeps up. Every job you finish closes with something one of them said, and a page goes down in the kid's own words. So does every folktale you are told.

Real ground, real words

The valley is built from real elevation data of the country the developer's own grandparents herded — not an invented steppe. Six real folktales are told across the summer and kept word for word in the journal; the ones that seed a dream, you walk into. Every practice is named with the word it actually has, once, with the sentence around it telling you what that word means.
