The idea came to me almost like fate. It was around August 2026, and Minesweeper seemed to be everywhere I looked. Com2uS had just released a game called Color Sweeper, and on mobile I kept seeing ads for endless-Minesweeper games. Above all, on a business trip, the woman sitting next to me was playing Minesweeper. Seeing all that, I realized just how many people love this game.
At the time, I was deep in the final stretch of my first game, Hearts Extreme. When I started Hearts Extreme, I had actually planned to make it a roguelike. But the more I built, the more I felt it didn't suit the genre, so I tore the whole structure down and rebuilt it. That left me looking for a fresh idea that a roguelike system would fit, and that's when Minesweeper caught my eye.
I kept the core of finding mines, but changed what winning means. Instead of having to avoid every mine, you score points as you play, and the challenge is to score while staying clear of the mines. The idea was to have many different ways to score, and to give every scoring square the same kind of hint Minesweeper gives you for mines. I also wanted the kind of score-snowballing you get in Balatro, so squares that act as a "multiplier" found their way into the game.
Building on that core, I'm working to pack in as many different kinds of fun as I can. Boomside is aiming for release in Q1 2027. Stay tuned!
