Dawn Aerowar is an interactive animated film. It blends 3D animation, 2D art and full voice acting to tell the story of a fighter pilot on his final mission, driven by revenge against the Empire that took everything from him.
He escorts a weapon no one should know exists. All that stands in his way are the aces of the Saal'Runa Empire, the last pilots standing after years of war.
The film runs nearly two hours of aerowar action and drama. Dawn is a story made and composed by veterans of the genre: a man on a mission, and what it would take to stop him.
You sit back, you turn the volume up, and you watch the film.
In a world scarred by years of war, the Free Nations stand on the brink of annihilation. The Saal'Runa Empire's iron fist has crushed all resistance, all but one.
One pilot flies one last sortie across the whole Empire: the northern front, the strait, the Aegis Sea, the Capital. Patrols chase him and missiles fan out over the clouds. Every flight is staged and animated in 3D and shot like a film.
Faces and cockpits are all hand drawn. Zodiac 1 lost everything to the Empire: his family, his home, his purpose. All that remains is a single, burning drive, revenge. Three aces have been sent to stop him.
- Reaper, the Name of Death, loves war more than peace.
- Freya, the Imperial Goddess, quotes philosophers while she shoots.
- Miracle, the Guardian Angel, is known for the lives she saved rather than the ones she took.
Each of them asks Zodiac the same thing: do you even know what you're fighting for?
Zodiac flies alone. What reaches him of the war comes over the cockpit radio, from an AWACS operator he has never heard before. She is talkative, sharp and strangely well informed, and between the two of them the whole war plays out in voices.
The voice cast is professional: Sam Hughes, Kira Buckland, Lara Sawalha, Blythe Melin, Sandra Espinoza, Mark Mullens, Jeremiah Foltz, and over thirty additional voices. Every word and every emotion is performed.
The soundtrack is fully original and composed to picture: orchestral, fast-paced and epic, with choirs, Bulgarian voices and classical guitar, plus two original songs. It is written by Jose Pavli, the composer of Project Wingman, and lasts 77 minutes.
Dawn is watched through its own player app, with episode select, subtitles, controller support and Steam achievements. You can play it on your PC, on the couch with a controller, or on a big screen.
- The film has 12 episodes and runs nearly two hours.
- Subtitles are available in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish.
- The film was 186% funded on Kickstarter by more than 600 backers.
Press Play and you are in the War Room: a war map of the whole operation, twelve missions along one route. The next sortie is marked. You launch it from the map. Before takeoff, for the first six sorties, a transmission from the coming mission is on the air: tune between 118 and 141 MHz, follow the signal, lock it, and listen. Then the episode plays, uncut.
When the episode ends you land back on the map. The route draws itself to the next step and the debrief counts what the sortie brought in: files unlocked, transmissions heard, interceptions. Twelve intelligence dossiers open along the way, with images and service records; the Communications log keeps the 458 radio transmissions of the operation by channel, with a receiver to play them back; during the film a live radio log follows the traffic. Achievements are tied to what you intercept, open and hear.
The player works with keyboard, mouse or gamepad. Cinematic mode, one click away in the War Room, in the player or in the settings, plays the film from start to finish with no radio and no return to the map.
